The University Resident Theatre Association is the nation's oldest and largest association of professional, graduate (MFA) theatre training programs and partnered professional theatre companies. URTA was established in 1969 to work towards the highest standards in theatre production and performance, and to help bring resident professional theatre to the university campus and its community.

URTA is committed to the development and expansion of important professional theatre and training laboratories, in which advanced students and professional artists work together to encourage achievement in production and performance. The results are skilled artists trained by professionals, and enriched programming that serves the surrounding communities.

One of the first projects URTA implemented was the National Unified Auditions/Interviews, or NUAIs, to help talented student artists benefit from instruction and production programs and to contribute to the creative work of resident theatres.

In addition to the NUAIs, URTA provides a variety of services and informational programs to its members, and to non-member students, theatre professionals and producing companies, including the URTA Contract Management Program (the largest not-for-profit contract management service of its kind in the country), Co-operative advertising with leading theatre journals, as well as continuing education programs, and more.
