Description

Casting is everything! In class you will discover what roles best suit your personality and traits.  In class we’ll do this by learning which role a feature film script, teleplay, or play best suits your personality. How do you identify this? You’ll learn this in Being an Actor.

Once you understand the best roles roles you’re suited for, you’ll be able to bring your essence to the part. We’ll work together to study the character by breaking down key traits and how it fits into the story.

In this class, we look at acting as a job. Your job is to create the reality of the character be it on stage or the screen. Specificity of that reality is your job. It’s something you must do alone, with my coaching. This takes time and practice.

In the digital era where cameras are available on your phone, computer, or personal DSLR, you are often requested to self-tape an audition. This provides you immense opportunity, but can also be disorienting and difficult to navigate. What is the best way to do this? What are casting directors or agents looking for? How can you impress the directors and producers hiring for the job? How much time do you have? How can you prepare the most competitive submission? We’ll work on this in class.

Once you’re called into audition, how do you communicate with the “people in the room” and perform truth under the stress of an audition? How do you prepare for one-line auditions for co-stars, guest stars, and series regular jobs. You might even be asking, what makes a role a co-star or guest star? What is a studio/network audition versus a test for a pilot or a significant role in a film. We will work on this together and make magic!

Being an Actor brings together the art and commerce of acting. Working with other actors and myself you can learn the tools to help you succeed. My goal is to create an environment that is safe enough to let you take risks and grow into a professional working actor.

Learning technique is key. We’ll focus on moment to moment acting and understanding exactly what that means and where it comes from. We’ll also work on freeing you of any old habits that are getting in the way of a true performance.

We’ll cover manager and agent relationships. How can you maximize these key partnerships that help advance your career?

As an actor, director, and talent representative I understand the business and art of show business. Together we’ll build self respect, self confidence, and self expression. And we’ll help you be an actor.

One of the hardest things in moving your career forward is learning to structure your life with the daily practice of being an actor -- managing your art and your business. The class will provide you with the tools to do the business and administration of your acting so that you can have the freedom to do what you love.
